Type 071 Yuzhao was developed as a amphibious transport dock during a major PLAN modernization phase.
Type 071 Yuzhao was China's first large modern amphibious transport dock class. It gave the PLAN Marine Corps and amphibious forces a platform for carrying troops, armored vehicles, helicopters and landing craft over longer distances than older landing ships. The class marked a step toward expeditionary and island-assault capacity.
Type 071 Yuzhao's hull, sensors and weapons reflect its intended amphibious transport dock mission.
The design includes a well deck for air-cushioned landing craft, vehicle and troop spaces, flight deck and hangar support for helicopters, and self-defense weapons. It is not a landing helicopter dock like Type 075, but it provides a major improvement in sealift, command and ship-to-shore movement compared with older LSTs.
Type 071 Yuzhao helped China expand routine naval presence, escort capacity or amphibious options.
Operationally, Type 071 ships support amphibious exercises, humanitarian missions, evacuation operations and distant deployments. They are central to China's ability to move marine forces and equipment around contested island spaces or overseas contingencies. Their presence changes the scale of PLAN amphibious options.
