Type 81: Development Context
mediumType 81 was developed as a assault rifle family during China's broader effort to localize and modernize military equipment.
The Type 81 rifle family was developed after the Sino-Vietnamese War exposed shortcomings in China's older Type 56 and Type 63 small arms mix. It became the PLA's main 7.62x39 mm service rifle of the 1980s and bridged the gap before the 5.8 mm QBZ-95 generation.
