Development of a modern service pistol
The USP was developed as a robust modular pistol family for military, police, and civilian markets.
The Heckler & Koch USP, short for Universal Self-loading Pistol, was developed in the late Cold War and early post-Cold War period as HK sought a modern polymer-frame pistol family. It was designed for reliability, durability, and multiple safety/trigger configurations, making it adaptable to different police and military preferences. The USP also drew on lessons from HK's work on the Mark 23 program, especially around ruggedness and high round-count reliability. Its family approach allowed variants in several calibers and sizes.
