French export tank after the AMX-30
AMX-40 was a French export-focused MBT that followed the AMX-30 and AMX-32 line.
The AMX-40 was developed by GIAT as a private-venture/export main battle tank building on lessons from the AMX-30 and AMX-32. France wanted a vehicle that could appeal to countries seeking modern Western firepower without necessarily buying the heaviest and most expensive NATO tanks. The program produced prototypes but did not secure the export orders needed for series production.
