Research Notes

Short-range infantry anti-armor weapon

ERYX gave infantry a short-range guided weapon between rockets and heavy ATGMs.

ERYX was developed by France and MBDA as a short-range anti-tank and direct-fire support weapon for infantry platoons and special units. It filled the gap between disposable rockets and heavier long-range anti-tank missiles. The system was designed for close terrain where infantry needed a guided weapon against armor, bunkers, and field positions.

Compact SACLOS missile for close combat

ERYX favors portability and close-range control over long-range standoff.

The missile uses SACLOS guidance and a compact launcher suited to dismounted troops. Its short range is a deliberate tradeoff: the system is easier to carry and use in urban, forested, or broken terrain than larger ATGMs. MBDA presented it as a general-purpose direct-fire support weapon, not only a tank killer.

French and export infantry support role

ERYX served as a close-range guided support weapon for infantry forces.

ERYX served with French forces and export customers, providing close-range guided firepower to infantry units. Its role has become more specialized as newer fire-and-forget weapons entered service, but it remains useful for understanding late Cold War and post-Cold War infantry anti-armor doctrine. It shows why guided weapons are needed even at short range.
