The Dassault M.D.450 Ouragan, developed post-World War II by Marcel Bloch's Dassault, was an early French jet-powered fighter featuring a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet engine and a straightforward design with a cylindrical fuselage and swept-back wings. Despite initial challenges in production capacity, the Ouragan made its maiden flight in 1951 and was noted for its stability in firing but susceptibility to flat spins during tight maneuvers.

Research Notes

First French production jet combat aircraft

The Dassault MD 450 Ouragan was France's first domestically designed jet combat aircraft to enter production. It marked a key postwar recovery step for the French aviation industry, moving from wartime disruption into independent jet fighter design and manufacture.

Early jet fighter-bomber role

Ouragan was a straight-wing early jet fighter-bomber with simple systems compared with later swept-wing aircraft. Its role combined fighter training, air defense, and ground attack, giving France and export users a practical first-generation jet while more advanced designs such as Mystere and Mirage families matured.

Industrial milestone more than long-term frontline type

The aircraft's greatest significance is industrial and doctrinal. It rebuilt French experience in jet airframes, production, and operational support. It was soon overtaken by faster swept-wing fighters, but without Ouragan the later Dassault jet lineage would have had a weaker foundation.
