Overview
Mirage I / MD-550 Mystère Delta
The Dassault Mirage III, developed from the MD.550 Mystère Delta, is a tailless delta-wing fighter aircraft designed as an all-weather interceptor, first flying in 1960 and entering service in 1961. It features a single-engine configuration, high-speed capabilities, and was armed with twin 30 mm cannons, though its design imposed limitations on maneuverability and landing performance.

Research Notes

Experimental delta precursor to the Mirage line

The MD-550 Mystere Delta, later known as Mirage I, was an experimental French interceptor concept that helped define Dassault's delta-wing Mirage lineage. It was built to explore a small, fast, all-weather interceptor requirement rather than to become a large production aircraft itself.

Delta-wing speed and climb experiment

The design investigated how a compact delta-wing aircraft could meet demanding speed, climb, and interception goals. Its lessons fed into larger and more capable Mirage developments, where engine power, radar, weapons, and airframe volume could better support operational requirements.

Prototype value through design learning

Mirage I matters because it shaped the design direction that led to the Mirage III, one of the most successful French fighter families. The prototype showed that the aerodynamic concept was promising while also revealing that a useful interceptor needed more growth capacity than the first small airframe could provide.
