R550 Magic

Matra's R550 Magic gave French and export fighters a domestic within-visual-range missile comparable in mission to other short-range infrared weapons of its era. The later Magic 2 improved seeker and engagement performance while keeping the missile in the close-combat category. The system is closely tied to aircraft such as Mirage fighters, where a lightweight heat-seeking missile was essential for dogfight and point-defense missions.

The R550 Magic family uses infrared homing, aerodynamic control surfaces, and a compact airframe suited to fighter pylons. It is not a beyond-visual-range missile; its role is to acquire heat-emitting aerial targets at close distance and maneuver rapidly after launch. Magic 2 is generally treated as the improved variant, with better acquisition and countermeasure resistance compared with the original Magic.

Operationally, Magic occupied the fighter's short-range missile station: useful for quick-reaction intercepts, merge engagements, and self-defense when radar-guided missiles were unnecessary or unavailable. Its export relevance came from integration with French aircraft sold abroad. As newer missiles with imaging seekers and high off-boresight capability entered service, Magic's relative value declined, but it remains historically important in the evolution of French air-to-air weapons.
