Research Notes

Early French wire-guided anti-tank missile

The SS.11 was a French Nord Aviation wire-guided anti-tank missile and one of the most influential first-generation ATGMs. It served from ground mounts, vehicles, and helicopters, making it important well beyond its original infantry anti-armor role.

Manual command guidance with flexible launch platforms

As a manual command-to-line-of-sight weapon, SS.11 required the operator to steer the missile onto the target. That was demanding, but it gave postwar armies a precision anti-armor weapon with greater reach than recoilless rifles and unguided rockets.

Helped create the armed anti-tank helicopter role

SS.11's use from French helicopters in Algeria and later export service demonstrated how helicopters could engage armor and fortified targets with guided missiles. That experience helped shape the dedicated anti-tank helicopter tactics that matured in later decades.
