Research Notes

Development of the Global Combat Ship

Type 26 is the Royal Navy's new City-class frigate and the basis for allied ASW frigate programs.

The Type 26 frigate, also called the City class in Royal Navy service, grew out of the Global Combat Ship program. It was developed to replace Type 23 frigates and restore a high-end anti-submarine warfare escort capability. The first ship, HMS Glasgow, is described by the Royal Navy as a fast, adaptable, future-proofed ship built in Glasgow. The design has also been selected in modified form by Australia, Canada, and Norway, making it one of the UK's most important modern naval exports.

Anti-submarine and mission-bay design

The class emphasizes quiet ASW operations, a mission bay, helicopter support, Sea Ceptor, and growth capacity.

Type 26 is optimized for anti-submarine warfare, which requires quiet propulsion, sonar performance, helicopters, and the ability to protect high-value naval forces. The design also includes a flexible mission bay for boats, unmanned systems, or containerized equipment, giving it more adaptability than older frigates. Weapons and sensors vary by national version, but the Royal Navy ships are built around ASW escort, self-defence, and future growth. The ship's value is partly in its margin for upgrades over a long service life.

Strategic and export significance

Type 26 is shaping future British, Australian, Canadian, and Norwegian frigate fleets.

Although still entering service, Type 26 already has strategic significance because it has become a shared design foundation among several allied navies. That creates industrial, interoperability, and sustainment implications well beyond the Royal Navy. It also shows the continuing importance of anti-submarine warfare in the North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific. For an equipment page, Type 26 should be framed as a platform family and export design as much as a British ship class.
