VHS

The HS Produkt VHS was developed as Croatia's domestic bullpup assault rifle, giving the Croatian Armed Forces a modern 5.56x45 mm NATO weapon produced by a national manufacturer. Its development reflected Croatia's broader post-independence effort to reduce dependence on inherited or foreign small arms while aligning with NATO ammunition standards. The first-generation VHS established the layout later refined in the VHS-2.

The rifle's bullpup configuration places the action and magazine behind the trigger, giving it a compact overall length without sacrificing as much barrel length as a conventional carbine. It is chambered for 5.56x45 mm NATO and uses a gas-operated rotating-bolt system typical of modern assault rifles. The first-generation design delivered compactness and NATO compatibility, though later refinements addressed ergonomics and ambidextrous handling.

Operationally, the VHS fills standard assault-rifle roles: infantry combat, patrol, training, and support to mechanized or security units. Its compactness is useful in vehicles and urban terrain, while the 5.56 mm chambering supports NATO interoperability. The platform's most important legacy is that it created a domestic rifle base from which Croatia developed the more exportable and ergonomically refined VHS-2.
