Makassar

The Makassar class is an Indonesian landing platform dock family designed by South Korea's Daesun Shipbuilding and built with PT PAL Indonesia. The class gives the Indonesian Navy a practical amphibious and sealift platform suited to an archipelagic country with widely dispersed islands.

Makassar-class ships can carry troops, vehicles, landing craft, and helicopters while retaining defensive guns and short-range air-defense weapons. Their core function is not high-end naval combat; it is moving useful capacity from one island or coastline to another when ports, roads, or airfields are limited.

The design has influenced regional amphibious procurement because it offers a cost-effective LPD template. For Indonesia, it supports disaster relief, military logistics, maritime security, and troop movement across an island geography where sealift is a daily strategic requirement rather than a niche mission.
