Research Notes

Indonesian-built sealift vessels for the Philippines

medium

The Tarlac class was built by PT PAL Indonesia for Philippine Navy amphibious and strategic sealift requirements.

The Tarlac class began as the Philippine Navy's Strategic Sealift Vessel programme and was constructed by PT PAL Indonesia. The design is derived from the Makassar-class landing platform dock lineage, giving the Philippines a larger amphibious and logistics platform without developing one domestically. The first ship, BRP Tarlac, was launched in 2016.

Landing platform dock with aviation and vehicle capacity

medium

The class carries troops, vehicles, landing craft, and helicopters for amphibious and disaster-response missions.

Tarlac-class ships are landing platform docks with a well deck, vehicle and troop capacity, a flight deck, and hangar support for helicopter operations. Their design supports both military amphibious movement and peacetime humanitarian assistance. Naval Technology describes the ships as derivatives of Indonesia's Makassar-class LPD, adapted for Philippine requirements.

Amphibious transport and HADR platform

medium

The class provides the Philippine Navy with strategic lift, disaster relief capacity, and command support at sea.

Operationally, Tarlac-class ships are valuable because they can move troops, vehicles, supplies, and helicopters across the Philippine archipelago. The same capacity is important for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief after typhoons or earthquakes. The class also demonstrates Indonesian shipbuilding export capability through a high-profile regional naval programme.
