Research Notes

Indigenous Indonesian tank landing ship class

medium

The Teluk Bintuni class was developed and built by Indonesian yards to carry armored vehicles and troops.

The Teluk Bintuni class, Indonesian designation AT-117M, is an indigenous landing ship tank class for the Indonesian Navy. It is built by local shipyards including PT Daya Radar Utama and others, supporting Indonesia's effort to build amphibious logistics ships domestically. The class was created to move tanks, armored vehicles, troops, and supplies across Indonesia's island geography.

117-metre LST for vehicles, troops, and helicopters

medium

The class combines beaching-style landing ship capacity with vehicle decks, landing craft, and helicopter support.

Teluk Bintuni-class ships displace roughly 2,300 tonnes and are configured to carry main battle tanks or infantry fighting vehicles, troops, landing craft, and small boats. Later variants include improved aviation support and armament changes. Their capacity makes them more than simple cargo ships: they are purpose-built naval connectors for amphibious movement.

Amphibious logistics and emergency response

medium

The class supports Indonesian marine mobility, island logistics, and disaster-relief tasks.

Operationally, the Teluk Bintuni class gives Indonesia practical amphibious lift for vehicles, marines, and supplies. Open reporting also links ships of the class to counter-piracy response and post-disaster aid transport, roles that suit Indonesia's wide maritime area. The class strengthens both military mobility and state response capacity across remote islands.
