The Kamorta-class corvettes are India's first indigenously designed anti-submarine warfare stealth corvettes, featuring advanced stealth technology, integrated combat systems, and a range of armaments. Commissioned between 2014 and 2020, these four ships enhance the Indian Navy's capabilities while promoting domestic expertise in warship construction.

Research Notes

Anti-submarine corvette

The Kamorta class is an Indian anti-submarine warfare corvette class built for escort and littoral naval missions.

Kamorta-class corvettes were designed to improve the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capacity, especially in regional waters where submarines, surface contacts, and maritime patrol assets interact closely. The class is part of India's broader effort to build specialised indigenous warships rather than relying only on imported combatants.

ASW focus

The class emphasises sonar, torpedoes, rockets, helicopter operations, and reduced acoustic signatures for submarine-hunting missions.

Anti-submarine warfare depends on sensor quality, quiet ship design, trained crews, and cooperation with helicopters or maritime patrol aircraft. Kamorta-class ships provide a dedicated surface platform for those tasks, using onboard and embarked systems to detect, localise, and attack underwater threats while also defending themselves against air and surface dangers.

Regional importance

The class matters because submarine activity in the Indian Ocean makes ASW escorts central to sea-control planning.

For India, protecting carrier groups, amphibious forces, merchant traffic, and approaches to naval bases requires credible ASW ships. Kamorta is therefore more than a corvette entry: it represents a specialised response to underwater competition in the Indian Ocean region and to India's need for locally built escort capacity.
