Research Notes

Israeli bullpup rifle designed for 21st-century infantry

medium

The TAR-21 was developed to give Israeli infantry a compact 5.56 mm rifle suited to vehicles, urban combat, and modern optics.

The TAR-21, or Tavor Assault Rifle for the 21st century, was developed by Israel Weapon Industries to replace older service rifles with a compact bullpup design. Israel's operating environment placed high value on short overall length for vehicles and built-up terrain while still preserving a useful rifle-length barrel. The Tavor family later expanded into shorter and updated variants, but the TAR-21 remains the foundational model of the line.

5.56 NATO long-stroke piston bullpup

medium

The rifle combines 5.56x45 mm NATO ammunition, bullpup packaging, and modern sight integration.

The TAR-21 is a select-fire 5.56x45 mm NATO assault rifle using a bullpup layout, with the magazine and action behind the trigger. This gives it a shorter overall length than a conventional rifle with similar barrel length. Its design supports optical sights and accessory integration, while the enclosed layout and polymer furniture reflect late-20th-century infantry-rifle trends. Its tradeoffs are typical of bullpups: different reload mechanics, trigger-linkage feel, and more complex left-handed accommodation than conventional rifles.

Compact infantry weapon for IDF and export users

medium

The TAR-21 has served in Israeli infantry roles and helped establish the Tavor family internationally.

Operationally, the TAR-21 is suited to mechanized infantry, urban operations, patrols, and general service-rifle tasks. Its compactness is valuable in armored vehicles and close terrain, while 5.56 mm ammunition supports NATO-compatible logistics. Later Tavor variants and the X95 refined the concept, but the TAR-21's service record made the family recognizable to foreign militaries and law-enforcement users.
