Italy's late Cold War 5.56 mm service rifle
The AR70/90 replaced older Italian battle-rifle practice with a NATO 5.56 mm family adopted by the Italian armed forces.
The Beretta AR70/90 emerged from Italy's need for a standard 5.56x45 mm NATO rifle family in the late Cold War period. It replaced the earlier BM59-era service-rifle approach with a lighter intermediate-caliber weapon better aligned with NATO ammunition and infantry doctrine. The family included fixed-stock, folding-stock, and compact airborne or armored-troop variants, allowing the same mechanical base to serve infantry, special forces, and vehicle crews. Its significance is therefore institutional: it marked the Italian armed forces' move into the modern assault-rifle standard.
