Lead-in fighter trainer

The M-346 Master is an advanced jet trainer used to prepare pilots for modern combat aircraft.

The M-346 is designed for the high end of the training pipeline, where pilots need to learn fast-jet handling, high workload cockpit management, tactical manoeuvring, and advanced mission systems. It is not simply a school aircraft: it emulates many of the procedures and sensor-management demands of modern fighters while avoiding the cost of using frontline combat aircraft for all training hours.

Advanced synthetic training

The platform supports complex training through avionics, simulation, embedded scenarios, and high-performance flight characteristics.

Lead-in fighter training now blends real flying with simulated sensors, weapons, threats, and datalinks. The M-346's value is that it can expose students to those tactical workloads in a controlled training environment. This shortens the jump from trainer to operational fighter and lets air forces reserve expensive combat aircraft for later conversion and frontline readiness.

Export relevance

The M-346 is important because it became one of Europe's most visible modern advanced-trainer exports.

As fighter aircraft grow more complex, the market for advanced trainers becomes strategically important. The M-346 gives Italy and Leonardo a role in that market, supporting allied training systems and export relationships. For HiWars, it represents the training layer behind fifth-generation and advanced fourth-generation air forces.
