Italian Export MBT From OTO Melara And Fiat

medium

The OF-40 was an Italian export-focused main battle tank developed by OTO Melara and Fiat in the late 1970s.

The OF-40 was developed as Italy's attempt to enter the export main battle tank market with a vehicle that reused proven Western components and national industrial capacity. OTO Melara handled the armored design and production role, while Fiat supplied automotive expertise. The name reflects OTO-Fiat and the intended 40-ton class. It was designed for customers that wanted a Leopard 1-like Western tank without joining larger procurement programs. Its only major customer was the United Arab Emirates, which bought both early and improved versions plus support variants.

Leopard-Influenced 105 mm Tank

medium

OF-40 used a 105 mm rifled gun, four-person crew, diesel engine and conventional torsion-bar running gear.

The OF-40's layout followed the Western MBT pattern of the period: driver in the hull, three crew in the turret, a 105 mm rifled main gun, coaxial and roof machine guns, diesel power and torsion-bar suspension. It shared some conceptual and component similarities with the Leopard 1, but was an Italian product rather than a simple copy. Armor protection was moderate by later standards, so mobility and fire-control improvements mattered. The Mk.2 version improved the fire-control system, making the tank more competitive for the 1980s export market.

UAE Service And Limited Export Outcome

medium

OF-40's operational history is concentrated in UAE service, where it filled an armored-force modernization role but never became a broad export success.

Operationally, the OF-40 served mainly with the United Arab Emirates, which received the tanks and later upgraded early vehicles. It gave the UAE a Western-style MBT capability before later procurement shifted toward newer vehicles. The limited customer base meant the OF-40 never gained the logistics depth or modernization ecosystem of Leopard, M60 or T-72 families. Its significance is therefore tied to Italian defense exports and UAE armored development. It is a serious production tank, but not a widely fielded global MBT.
