Development Context
mediumType 74 was Japan's Cold War replacement for the Type 61 and bridged the gap to later Type 90 and Type 10 tanks.
The Type 74 was developed by Mitsubishi for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force after the Type 61 no longer matched the armored threats Japan expected in the 1970s. It remained a conventional second-generation main battle tank, but it added a stronger 105 mm gun, better fire-control equipment, and hydropneumatic suspension suited to Japan's varied terrain. Its long service life shows both the durability of the design and the slow, controlled pace of Japanese tank replacement.
