Type 96 Mortar

The Type 96 120 mm self-propelled mortar entered JGSDF service in the 1990s as a mobile indirect-fire system. It paired a tracked chassis with a 120 mm mortar to provide heavier fire support than light mortars while improving protection and mobility compared with towed or hand-carried systems. The design reflects Japan's preference for domestic adaptation of proven mortar technology.

Technically, the Type 96 carries a 120 mm rifled mortar on an armored tracked carrier. The system can deliver high-angle fire against troops, field positions, and light structures while moving with ground formations. It is not a turreted direct-fire vehicle; its combat value comes from indirect fire, ammunition capacity, crew protection, and the ability to relocate after missions.

Operationally, the Type 96 can support infantry and mechanized units in defensive or counter-landing scenarios. Its mobility helps mortar teams keep pace with supported units and reduce vulnerability to counter-battery fire. Effective use depends on observers, fire-direction systems, ammunition supply, and disciplined shoot-and-scoot procedures.
