Research Notes

First-generation Korean MBT

K1 is South Korea's domestically produced main battle tank family that preceded the K2 Black Panther.

The K1 tank, sometimes known as the Type 88 tank, was South Korea's first major modern main battle tank programme. It was developed with American design support and Korean industrial participation, creating a national armoured platform suited to the peninsula's terrain. The K1 family laid the foundation for later Korean tank development.

Armoured force backbone

The K1 family provides protected direct fire, mobility, and upgrade capacity for Korean armoured formations.

K1 tanks give the Republic of Korea Army a heavily protected direct-fire platform for defensive and offensive manoeuvre. Later K1A1 upgrades improved firepower and systems, extending the family's relevance. The tank remains important because large fleets shape training, maintenance, doctrine, and mobilisation capacity.

Programme legacy

K1 matters because it established the industrial base that made later Korean tank programmes possible.

K1 is not only a platform in service; it is the bridge between imported armour dependence and Korea's own advanced MBT industry. In HiWars, it helps explain how South Korea moved toward the K2 and a competitive armour export sector.
