RQ-101 Songgolmae is a KAI-developed UAV used for army reconnaissance and surveillance.
Korea Aerospace Industries states that it deployed the Songgolmae reconnaissance UAV with the Republic of Korea Army and identifies it as the Corps Level UAV RQ-101. KAI brochure material also lists RQ-101 Songgolmae as a corps-level UAV. The platform is an uncrewed reconnaissance aircraft, not a MALE UAV in the modern large-endurance class.
The system is built to provide battlefield imagery and target information to ground commanders.
RQ-101's role is intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance for corps-level units. Such UAVs typically combine an air vehicle, ground control station, sensors, datalink, and recovery/logistics package. The value is real-time observation for ground forces rather than weapons carriage or strategic persistence.
Songgolmae matters because it gave South Korea domestic operational UAV experience.
Even if newer UAV programs are more capable, RQ-101 is important as an early indigenous operational system. It helped South Korea develop doctrine, maintenance routines, operator training, and production experience for follow-on drones. Its limitations are endurance, payload, survivability, and sensor performance compared with newer MALE or high-altitude systems.
