Mobile Divisional Air Defense
Kub was created to protect Soviet ground forces from aircraft without relying on fixed air-defense sites.
The 2K12 Kub, known to NATO as SA-6 Gainful, was developed as a mobile medium-range surface-to-air missile system for Soviet ground formations. Its purpose was to move with armored and motorized units, close gaps between short-range guns and higher-level SAMs, and make low-to-medium altitude air attack more dangerous. This mobility made it very different from static strategic air-defense systems.
