Successor to Kub in Soviet medium-range air defense
Buk modernized Soviet mobile medium-range air defense after Kub.
9K37 Buk was developed as a mobile Soviet medium-range surface-to-air missile system to replace and improve on the 2K12 Kub generation. The Buk family added more capable engagement radars, missiles, and battalion-level integration for defending maneuver forces and important assets. The Buk-M1 branch became widely known under the NATO SA-11 Gadfly designation.
