Replacement for Tochka
Iskander was developed as a modern road-mobile short-range missile for Russian ground forces.
The 9K720 Iskander was developed after the Soviet period to replace older Tochka-series tactical ballistic missiles with a more capable short-range system. It entered Russian service in the 2000s and became a key theater-strike asset. The system was designed for mobility, precision, and survivability rather than the massed unguided missile approach of earlier generations.
