Research Notes

Successor to the Shturm missile line

Ataka modernized the Shturm lineage for Russian helicopter and vehicle anti-armor use.

The 9M120 Ataka was developed as a successor to the 9M114 Shturm family, improving anti-armor performance for helicopters and vehicle platforms. It gave Soviet and later Russian attack aviation a more capable missile for engaging tanks, fortifications, and some aerial targets. The missile is closely associated with aircraft such as the Mi-28 and upgraded Mi-24/35 families.

Radio-command missile for helicopter launch

Radio-command guidance and multiple warheads make Ataka useful for helicopters and vehicles.

Ataka uses radio-command guidance rather than wire guidance, which suits fast helicopter engagements and avoids wire limitations. Variants carry tandem shaped-charge, thermobaric, or proximity-fused warheads for different targets. The missile is stored and launched from a transport-launch container, making it part of a weapon system rather than a simple standalone round.

Common Russian helicopter ATGM

Ataka remains a common missile for Russian attack-helicopter anti-armor missions.

Ataka has been used by Russian and export helicopter fleets and appears in modern conflict reporting. Its importance comes from being a practical bridge between older Shturm weapons and more advanced missiles such as Khrizantema or Vikhr. It remains relevant wherever Russian attack helicopters or compatible ground launchers operate.
