Overview
AEK-971
The AEK-971 is a selective fire 5.45×39mm assault rifle developed in the late 1970s and 1980s, featuring a Balanced Automatics Recoil System (BARS) for improved accuracy and control during automatic fire. Although it was not selected for mass production initially, it underwent updates and was formally adopted by the Russian military in 2018, with serial production of its successor, the KORD 6P67, beginning in 2020.

Balanced-action rival to Kalashnikov rifles

The AEK-971 was developed around a counterbalanced mechanism intended to improve automatic-fire control.

The AEK-971 originated from Soviet and Russian attempts to improve assault-rifle hit probability without abandoning familiar intermediate cartridges. Modern Firearms links the design to the Abakan-era search for more controllable automatic fire and later development into A-545/6P67-type rifles. Unlike a conventional AK mechanism, the AEK concept used balanced moving masses to counter some recoil impulse, making it an important rival lineage to Kalashnikov's simpler long-stroke piston rifles.

Counterbalanced automatic fire

Its defining feature is a balanced recoil system that moves a counterweight opposite the bolt carrier.

The AEK-971's balanced automatic system uses linked moving parts to reduce disturbance during automatic fire. This improves controllability, especially in bursts, but adds mechanical complexity compared with standard AK-pattern rifles. Later Kord 6P67 rifles kept the balanced-action principle while modernizing ergonomics, rails, stocks, and controls. The design trade-off is classic: better automatic-fire behavior in exchange for more parts, higher cost, and a greater maintenance burden.

Selective adoption for specialists

AEK-derived rifles remained less common than AKs but influenced Russian special-purpose rifle procurement.

In service, the AEK-971 and its successors never displaced Kalashnikov rifles across Russian forces. The AK family remained cheaper, familiar, and easier to support. However, the balanced-action line remained attractive for selected users who valued controllability and were willing to accept more complexity. Rosoboronexport's 6P67 material shows the concept's survival as a modern export and specialist rifle rather than a dead experimental branch.
