Research Notes

Compact 5.45 mm AK-100 carbine

The AK-105 shortened the AK-74M/AK-100 pattern for users wanting a handier 5.45 mm weapon.

The AK-105 belongs to the compact branch of the AK-100 family, sitting between a full-length AK-74M and the very short AKS-74U. Modern Firearms groups it with the AK-102 and AK-104 because the three weapons share the same compact layout while differing mainly by caliber. The AK-105 preserved the Russian 5.45x39 mm cartridge and AK manual of arms while improving portability for vehicle crews, airborne troops, police, and close-quarters users.

Short barrel with full AK controls

It uses a shortened barrel, folding polymer stock, side optics rail, and standard Kalashnikov operating system.

Design-wise, the AK-105 keeps the Kalashnikov gas-operated rotating-bolt action and familiar controls. Its shorter barrel and compact muzzle device make it easier to handle in vehicles and buildings, while the folding stock aids transport. Compared with the AKS-74U, it offers a longer barrel and more rifle-like handling; compared with the AK-74M, it sacrifices some velocity for maneuverability. That middle position is the weapon's main tactical value.

Specialist Russian carbine role

The AK-105 has served as a compact 5.45 mm option rather than replacing full-length rifles.

In service, the AK-105 fills a specialist role. It is useful where a full rifle is inconvenient but a pistol-caliber submachine gun lacks range and penetration. Russian security and military users have favored it for close protection, vehicle work, and urban tasks, while full-length AK-74M and later AK-12 rifles remain more general issue. Its importance lies in giving Russian users a compact weapon without leaving the 5.45 mm logistics base.
