Kalashnikov balanced-recoil experiment
The AK-107 applied a balanced recoil mechanism to the AK family to improve automatic-fire control.
The AK-107 continued a Soviet and Russian interest in counterbalanced rifle mechanisms. Instead of accepting the usual movement of bolt carrier and gas system as a source of muzzle disturbance, the design used opposed moving mass to reduce felt disruption in automatic fire. The Firearm Blog's history of balanced recoil rifles places the AK-107 and Saiga 107 in a lineage of attempts to make Kalashnikov-pattern rifles more controllable without changing the basic role of the weapon.
