Research Notes

Improved Russian Project 20385 corvette derived from Steregushchiy

medium

The Gremyashchiy class, Project 20385, is an improved Russian corvette design developed from the Project 20380 Steregushchiy class. Almaz design work and Severnaya Verf construction aimed to add stronger strike capability and more modern systems while staying within a corvette-sized hull. The lead ship entered service after delays and sanctions-related changes.

Corvette hull with UKSK strike cells and Paket-NK defenses

medium

Project 20385 adds vertical-launch strike capability, modern sensors, Paket-NK anti-submarine and anti-torpedo systems, a 100 mm gun, air-defense missiles, and helicopter facilities. For its size, the ship carries a dense combat system. The compromise is cost and construction complexity, especially when foreign diesel components became unavailable after sanctions.

Small combatant showing Russia's missile-corvette emphasis

medium

Gremyashchiy-class ships are part of Russia's broader move to give smaller surface combatants long-range strike and modern self-defense systems. This matters because Russian shipbuilding has often struggled with larger warships, making corvettes and frigates disproportionately important to fleet renewal.
