Research Notes

Extended-range Kornet evolution

Kornet-EM extends the Kornet family with longer reach and broader target options.

Kornet-EM was developed by KBP as a modernized and extended-range evolution of the Kornet anti-tank missile family. It responded to the need for greater range, improved target engagement, and more flexible warhead options against tanks, fortifications, and low-speed aerial targets. The system is part of Russia's effort to keep ground-launched ATGMs dangerous against modern armor.

Laser-beam riding missile with automated tracking

Laser-beam guidance and automated tracking make Kornet-EM a higher-end ATGM system.

Kornet-EM uses laser-beam riding guidance and can be integrated on vehicle launchers with automated target tracking. Variants include tandem HEAT missiles for armor and thermobaric missiles for structures and personnel. Compared with older crew-served ATGMs, the modernized system emphasizes range, salvo potential, and reduced operator workload.

Exported and combat-visible Russian ATGM

Kornet-EM is a modern export-facing member of a combat-visible Russian ATGM family.

Kornet-family missiles have been widely exported and have appeared in multiple conflicts. Kornet-EM represents the more capable end of that lineage, often mounted on vehicles for mobile anti-armor ambush and defensive roles. Its importance lies in showing how relatively compact ATGMs can challenge heavy armor when used from prepared positions or mobile launchers.
