Ground-attack branch of the Flogger family
mediumThe MiG-27 was derived from MiG-23 fighter-bomber development to create a more specialized tactical strike aircraft.
The MiG-27 Flogger was developed from the MiG-23 family as a dedicated ground-attack and tactical strike aircraft. Instead of emphasizing air interception, the MiG-27 focused on low-level attack, battlefield interdiction, and delivery of unguided and guided weapons. The aircraft was also license-produced and further developed in India, where it served for decades as the Bahadur. Its development shows how the MiG-23 airframe was adapted into a separate strike platform rather than remaining only a fighter.
