Development History

medium

Su-24 Fencer was the Soviet all-weather tactical bomber counterpart to Western strike aircraft.

The Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer was developed in the Soviet Union as a variable-sweep-wing, all-weather tactical strike aircraft. It answered a requirement for high-speed low-level penetration, precision attack, and night/adverse-weather operations beyond what earlier Soviet fighter-bombers could provide. The aircraft entered service in the 1970s and became a major strike platform for Soviet, Russian, and export air forces. Its role is better described as tactical bomber or strike aircraft than close air support, although it can attack ground targets.

Technical Profile

medium

The aircraft combines variable-geometry wings, two crew, terrain-following attack systems, and heavy weapons load.

Technically, Su-24 uses side-by-side crew seating, variable-geometry wings, two engines, and avionics for low-level all-weather strike. It can carry bombs, rockets, guided weapons, anti-radiation missiles, and a gun depending on variant and mission. The Su-24M improved navigation and attack systems, while export Su-24MK variants served foreign operators. Its design favors speed, payload, and penetration at low altitude, but it is maintenance-intensive and less survivable in dense modern air-defense environments without support.

Operational Use

medium

Su-24 has seen extensive combat use in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Syria, Ukraine, and export conflicts.

Operationally, Su-24 has been one of Russia's most important strike aircraft. It has supported bombing, interdiction, reconnaissance, and maritime-strike missions across several conflicts. Export users also employed the type in regional wars. Its strengths are payload and all-weather strike capability, while its weaknesses include age, radar signature, and vulnerability to modern fighters and surface-to-air missiles. In Ukraine and Syria, Su-24 operations illustrated both the persistence of Soviet-era strike aircraft and the risks they face near modern air defenses.
