Overview
Su-47 "Berkut" Firkin
The Su-47 Berkut is an experimental aircraft derived from the Su-27, featuring a reverse-swept wing design that enhances maneuverability at supersonic speeds. Selected by the Russian government in 2002 for the next-generation PAK FA fighter program, it incorporates advanced materials for its fuselage and wings, offers decent stealth capabilities, and includes a high-tech cockpit and avionics system.

Research Notes

Agility research with structural complexity

Forward-swept wings can offer useful handling and high-angle-of-attack characteristics, but they impose severe structural demands because aerodynamic loads tend to twist the wing. Su-47 therefore tested both aerodynamic behavior and whether composite materials and flight controls could make such a layout practical on a large supersonic aircraft.

Technology pathfinder rather than production fighter

Berkut's importance lies in flight-test learning, not fleet deployment. Its unusual appearance often receives more attention than its real contribution: giving Sukhoi experience with advanced structures, internal layout choices, control laws, and research data useful for later Russian fighter development.
