Research Notes

Swedish Jet Trainer and Light Attack Aircraft

medium

Saab 105 was developed in Sweden as a twin-engine jet trainer with secondary light attack capability. The Swedish Air Force used it as the Sk 60, while Austria operated armed variants as the Saab 105Ö. The aircraft entered service in the 1960s and remained in Swedish training service for decades, making it one of Sweden's most durable indigenous aircraft programs.

Twin-Jet Training Platform

medium

The Saab 105 has side-by-side seating, twin small turbofan engines, straight wings, and provisions for external stores on armed versions. Its layout supports instructor-student interaction and basic jet handling while remaining simple compared with front-line fighters. It is not a true multirole fighter by modern standards; its combat role is light attack, weapons training, and secondary support rather than high-end air combat.

Pilot Training and Light Attack Service

medium

Operationally, Saab 105/Sk 60 trained generations of Swedish pilots and supported weapons instruction, liaison, and light attack tasks. Austria used armed aircraft for air policing and training-related missions. Its value is institutional: a reliable domestic trainer helped Sweden sustain an independent combat-aircraft ecosystem around Draken, Viggen, and Gripen operations.
