Newest B61 gravity-bomb variant

B61-13 was announced in 2023 as a modern U.S. nuclear gravity bomb variant pending authorization and funding.

The B61-13 is the newest publicly announced member of the B61 gravity bomb family. The Department of Defense announced pursuit of the variant in October 2023, emphasizing that it would not increase the overall number of weapons in the U.S. stockpile. NNSA later announced completion of the first B61-13 assembly, framing the B61 as the longest-serving and most versatile weapon in the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

Modern variant using existing family architecture

Public DoD material describes B61-13 as using modern delivery features while providing a higher-yield option for selected targets.

The B61-13 is publicly described as a modern variant related to the broader B61 modernization path. DoD material states that it would provide additional options against certain harder and large-area military targets, while using modern delivery aircraft. The important public point is policy and force-structure flexibility: B61-13 changes the mix of options without increasing total stockpile numbers.

Deterrence-flexibility role

B61-13 is intended to support the air leg of the U.S. nuclear triad and future bomber delivery options.

In service terms, the B61-13 belongs to U.S. strategic deterrence planning rather than ordinary tactical aviation. NNSA describes the B61 as a mainstay of the air leg of the nuclear triad, and the B61-13 announcement links the variant to additional presidential options in extreme contingencies. Its significance is therefore not battlefield use, but how the United States manages deterrence credibility, assurance, and stockpile modernization.
