Fifth-generation air-superiority design

high

The F-22 was built around stealth, supercruise, sensor fusion and high maneuverability rather than a single performance statistic.

The F-22 Raptor represents the U.S. Air Force move from late Cold War fourth-generation fighters to a fifth-generation air-superiority aircraft. Its value is not only low observability, but the combination of stealth shaping, supercruise, integrated avionics and high agility in one operational platform. That combination lets the aircraft enter contested airspace, detect and classify threats, and engage without relying on the same external support architecture required by older fighters.

Sensor fusion and first-look engagement

high

Integrated avionics are central to how the aircraft turns stealth into tactical advantage.

A useful way to understand the Raptor is as a sensor and decision platform as much as a fighter. The aircraft’s avionics architecture fuses radar, electronic support and data-link inputs into a pilot-centered tactical picture. That matters because stealth alone does not win an air fight; the aircraft must also find, prioritize and prosecute targets while minimizing its own emissions and exposure.

Small fleet, high strategic leverage

high

Because production ended at a limited fleet size, sustainment and modernization drive much of the Raptor story.

The F-22 fleet is relatively small, which makes readiness, depot capacity and modernization unusually important. The aircraft remains tied to U.S. air-dominance planning because it can open or defend airspace for other assets, but its limited numbers mean each tail has strategic weight. Current support efforts therefore focus on keeping the fleet available and tactically relevant while newer systems emerge.

Key publicly documented milestones of the F-22 program.

1991-04ATF competition won

The Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics YF-22 is selected over the Northrop YF-23 in the Advanced Tactical Fighter competition.

1997-09First flight

The first F-22 engineering and manufacturing development aircraft flies from Marietta, Georgia on September 7, 1997.

2005-12Initial operational capability

The U.S. Air Force declares IOC with the 27th Fighter Squadron at Langley AFB on December 15, 2005.

2011-12Production ends

The final production F-22 rolls out after the program is capped at 187 operational aircraft; the last jet is delivered in May 2012.

2014-09Combat debut

F-22s fly their first combat missions, striking Islamic State targets in Syria during the opening night of Operation Inherent Resolve.

2023-02First air-to-air kill

An F-22 downs a Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon off South Carolina with an AIM-9X — the type's first air-to-air kill.

2025Retirement recast, major upgrades funded

The Air Force shelves near-term retirement plans and funds a multi-billion-dollar upgrade pipeline including the Infrared Defensive System (IRDS) and stealthy external fuel tanks.

Strategic significance

medium

The F-22 was the world's first operational fifth-generation fighter and remains the reference point against which stealth air-superiority designs are measured. Its combination of very low observability, supercruise, thrust-vectoring agility and the AN/APG-77 AESA radar gave the United States a generational lead in air dominance when it entered service in 2005, and it continues to anchor U.S. air superiority planning in the Pacific.

The program's principal limitation is scale. Production was capped at 187 operational aircraft in 2009 and the line closed in 2011, while a statutory export ban kept the type out of allied inventories. With roughly 185 airframes remaining and only around 150 combat-coded, the fleet is small relative to the theater-wide demands it is expected to meet, and each airframe lost or committed carries outsized weight.

Rather than retiring the fleet as once planned, the Air Force is now investing billions in viability upgrades — infrared defensive sensors, improved stealth coatings, electronic warfare enhancements and stealthy external fuel tanks — to keep the F-22 credible against China's maturing J-20 fleet and to bridge the gap until the sixth-generation F-47 enters service. In that role the Raptor functions both as the current top-end air superiority asset and as a pathfinder for technologies destined for its successor.
