The KC-130J Super Hercules is a U.S. Marine Corps tanker and transport variant of the C-130J family. It supports expeditionary aviation by refueling helicopters, tiltrotors, and tactical aircraft while also moving cargo, personnel, and equipment into austere operating areas.
Unlike strategic tankers optimized for large air bases, the KC-130J is useful close to expeditionary forces. It can operate from shorter or less-developed runways, provide fuel to Marine air assets, conduct rapid ground refueling, and deliver supplies to forward units that would be difficult to sustain by road or ship alone.
The aircraft is important to concepts such as distributed aviation operations and expeditionary advanced base operations. When aircraft are spread across islands or temporary sites, KC-130Js help keep them fueled and supplied without concentrating all activity at a few vulnerable main bases.
