Cold War Heavy Tank Requirement
The M103 was the U.S. answer to feared Soviet heavy armor after World War II.
The M103 grew out of late-war and immediate postwar heavy-tank studies, but urgency increased as Cold War tensions rose and the Korean War exposed the need for modern armor. The T43 program sought a lighter, more practical successor to very heavy experimental vehicles while still carrying a powerful 120 mm gun. Chrysler production produced a limited but important U.S. heavy tank family.
