Postwar bridge from Pershing to the Patton tank line
highM46 Patton matters because it modernized the M26 Pershing concept for early Cold War armored forces.
The M46 Patton was a transitional tank. It took the late World War II Pershing foundation and improved powertrain and automotive performance for the early Cold War battlefield.
That makes it important even though it was quickly followed by newer Patton designs. It helped the U.S. Army move from wartime medium/heavy tank categories toward a more modern tank family.
For HiWars, M46 should be framed as a bridge between World War II armored lessons and the Korean War-era Patton lineage.
