The MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System, commonly known as ATACMS, is a U.S. short-range ballistic missile family launched from M270 MLRS and HIMARS launchers. It was built to give ground forces a deep-strike weapon able to attack high-value targets well beyond conventional rocket range.
ATACMS variants use solid propulsion and carry unitary or submunition payloads depending on model. The missile allows a ground commander to attack air-defense sites, command centers, logistics areas, airfields, and missile launchers at operational depth without waiting for aircraft availability.
ATACMS is increasingly being replaced or supplemented by Precision Strike Missile, but it remains important because it established the U.S. ground-launched deep-fires architecture. Its use by allies has also shown how long-range precision fires can alter enemy logistics, airbase use, and command behavior.
