Research Notes

High-altitude maritime surveillance UAV

The MQ-4C Triton is a U.S. Navy high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft built by Northrop Grumman for broad-area maritime surveillance. Derived from the Global Hawk lineage, it is optimized for ocean surveillance, intelligence collection, and persistent maritime domain awareness.

Persistent wide-area ocean sensing

Triton combines long endurance, high-altitude flight, maritime radar, electro-optical sensors, and communications links to monitor vast sea areas. It complements crewed patrol aircraft such as the P-8A Poseidon by maintaining persistent coverage and cueing other assets toward contacts of interest.

Indo-Pacific surveillance enabler

The aircraft is especially relevant in the Indo-Pacific, where distances are huge and maritime activity is dense. Triton helps navies watch sea lanes, track surface vessels, support deterrence patrols, and share intelligence with allies such as Australia, which has also invested in the system.
