Research Notes

Ship-based unmanned helicopter

The MQ-8 Fire Scout is a Northrop Grumman unmanned helicopter system developed for the U.S. Navy. It provides ship-based intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting support from smaller surface combatants that may not always be able to embark a crewed helicopter.

Vertical takeoff ISR from naval decks

Fire Scout's helicopter configuration allows it to take off and land vertically from ship flight decks while carrying sensors for surveillance and target detection. The MQ-8C version uses a larger airframe than MQ-8B, improving endurance and payload potential for surface warfare support.

Extending sensors from small combatants

The system matters because unmanned aircraft can push a ship's sensor horizon farther out without risking aircrew. For littoral combat ships and other surface vessels, Fire Scout can search, classify, and help target contacts while the ship remains farther from threats.
