AeroVironment Small UAS Family Member

medium

RQ-12 Wasp is an AeroVironment small unmanned aircraft system developed for tactical reconnaissance by small units. It belongs to the same general U.S. small-UAS ecosystem as Raven and Puma, not to the MALE UAV class despite the current category. The Wasp AE became a Marine Corps and special-operations oriented system for portable day/night surveillance.

Hand-Launched Electric Reconnaissance UAV

medium

Wasp is a lightweight electric, hand-launched UAV with electro-optical and infrared payload options, recoverable airframe, and portable ground control. Its strengths are low acoustic signature, rapid launch, and organic surveillance for patrols. It is not a combat UAV in the armed sense; its role is reconnaissance, target observation, route checking, and local situational awareness.

Squad and Patrol-Level ISR

medium

Operationally, RQ-12 gives small teams a way to see beyond terrain, buildings, and immediate line of sight without calling higher-level aircraft. It improves route security, force protection, and target confirmation. Its limitations are weather, endurance, payload size, and electronic-warfare vulnerability, but it is valuable because it pushes ISR down to the tactical edge.
