Marine Corps Mini-UAV Program

medium

RQ-14 Dragon Eye was developed by the Naval Research Laboratory and Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory as a backpack-carried tactical reconnaissance UAV for the U.S. Marine Corps. It first flew in the early 2000s and served as an early example of small-unit organic UAV capability before later systems became routine.

Hand-Launched Battery UAV

medium

Dragon Eye is a small electric UAV launched by hand or bungee and used with a portable ground control station. It provides real-time imagery to field commanders and can fly autonomous routes. Like Wasp, it is a reconnaissance mini-UAV rather than a MALE or armed UCAV. Its compactness made it suitable for infantry and Marine patrols.

Infantry Reconnaissance and Scientific Afterlife

medium

Operationally, Dragon Eye helped Marines inspect routes, observe targets, and reduce risk to patrols. After military use, Dragon Eye airframes were also used by NASA for hazardous environmental research such as volcanic plume sampling. That afterlife illustrates the value of small recoverable UAVs beyond combat reconnaissance.
