The RQ-7 Shadow is a tactical unmanned aircraft system originally developed by AAI for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. It provided brigade commanders with organic reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, and battle-damage assessment before smaller drones became widespread.
Shadow uses a launcher, ground control station, and sensor payloads to deliver near-real-time video and targeting information. It can operate from unprepared sites and transmit imagery into Army command-and-control systems, linking reconnaissance directly to artillery, maneuver, and intelligence workflows.
The system saw extensive use in Iraq and Afghanistan, but its noise, launch footprint, and maintenance burden created pressure for newer platforms. Its long service life still matters because it defined what brigade-level UAS support looked like for a generation of U.S. ground commanders.
