T28 Heavy Tank Destroyer is best understood as a U.S. super-heavy assault gun / tank destroyer prototype. The T28 was developed to attack heavily fortified positions such as the Siegfried Line, emphasizing armor and a powerful 105 mm gun over mobility.
Its extreme armor, very low silhouette, four-track arrangement, and slow speed made it a specialized siege vehicle rather than a practical general-purpose tank.
The war ended before it could matter operationally, but the surviving T28 became a striking example of late-war overmatch thinking and the limits of super-heavy vehicle design.
