Research Notes

Development history

medium

T29 was a late-war U.S. heavy tank project that became a postwar test platform rather than a combat vehicle.

The T29 Heavy Tank was an American late-World War II project begun in response to heavily armored German tanks such as the Tiger II. It was not ready before the war in Europe ended, so its value shifted from immediate combat fielding to postwar test and development work. The T29, T30, and T34 families gave U.S. engineers experience with heavy armor, large turrets, powerful guns, and drivetrain loads that influenced later heavy-tank thinking.

Technical profile

medium

The tank combined a 105 mm gun, heavy armor, large turret, and six-man crew in an experimental heavy chassis.

The T29 paired heavy armor with a 105 mm T5-series gun, a large turret, six-man crew, torsion-bar suspension, and a gasoline engine/transmission package sized for a vehicle far heavier than the M26 Pershing. Its design emphasized protection and anti-heavy-tank firepower, but the weight and complexity made it poorly suited to rapid wartime mass production. Surviving examples demonstrate the scale of U.S. heavy-tank experimentation after 1944.

Operational use

medium

It had no combat service; its significance is experimental heavy-tank evaluation.

The T29 did not see combat and should be treated as an experimental heavy tank. Its operational importance is indirect: it helped the U.S. Army evaluate how much protection, firepower, mobility, and logistics burden a very heavy tank imposed. That makes it useful for comparison with the later M103 heavy tank and with foreign heavy-tank concepts of the immediate postwar period.
