052D Tongchuan Ship Joins Southern Theater Navy in 2026, Completing the 35th Shield Ship of the PLA to Fill the Carrier Escort Gap

On June 2, Chinese state media disclosed a detail that is easily overlooked but significant: the 052D-class guided missile destroyer Tongchuan, hull number 177, has officially joined the Southern Theater Navy. Looking at a single ship entering service, this is not big news; however, when placed within the context of the mass production of the 052D, the Liaoning's long-range training, and the normalization of surface combat forces in the South China Sea, the Tongchuan ship appears to be another node in the PLA Navy's continued deployment of "sufficient shield ships" to the front line.

The Highlight of Tongchuan Ship Lies in Its Batch, Not Its Name

According to a report by China Daily on June 2, the Tongchuan ship has joined the South China Sea Fleet, with a full-load displacement estimated to be close to 8,000 tons, equipped with a 130mm naval gun, close-in weapon systems, air defense and anti-ship missiles, and featuring phased array radar and low radar cross-section design. The report also mentioned that the new batch of 052D ships has a longer hull compared to earlier models, upgraded firepower and radar systems, and can carry larger onboard helicopters.

The most critical points in these sentences are not "advanced," but rather "longer hull" and "larger helicopters." One of the issues with the early 052D was that the hangar and flight deck were primarily designed around the Z-9 class helicopter, limiting its anti-submarine radius and payload. The improved 052DL extends the hull, with public data typically estimating the length at about 162 meters, one of the purposes being to accommodate heavier anti-submarine helicopters like the Z-20F. In simple terms, the 052D is evolving from a purely regional air defense ship towards a more balanced escort ship for formations.

The 35th 052D Indicates Production Capacity is More Important than Individual Ship Performance

Official reports state that since the commissioning of the Kunming ship in March 2014, the PLA Navy has received 35 ships of the 052D series. This number may look like an equipment statistic, but it actually reflects the continuous supply capability of shipbuilding, radar, vertical launch systems, onboard electronics, and crew training systems. According to public data, the 052D typically uses a 64-cell universal vertical launch system, capable of loading various munitions such as the HQ-9B air defense missile, YJ-18 anti-ship missile, and anti-submarine rocket-assisted torpedoes. Compared to the U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke-class with 96 cells, there is still a gap in individual ship ammunition capacity, but the scale of 35 ships will change the availability of formations.

The author believes that the real issue with the 052D is not that it is stronger than the Burke class, but that it is increasingly resembling an "industrial standard component." The Chinese Navy can allocate the 052D to carrier battle groups, amphibious task forces, South China Sea patrols, and Gulf of Aden escorts without having to deploy the 055-class destroyers every time. Once the number of these mid-to-high-end main ships increases, the training density during peacetime and the flexibility of wartime rotations will significantly improve.

Why the Southern Theater Navy Needs More 052Ds

The entry of the Tongchuan ship into the Southern Theater Navy is not an isolated event. In late May, the Liaoning carrier group conducted training in the Western Pacific, with public reports indicating that training subjects included long-range tactical flights, live-fire exercises, support and cover operations, and comprehensive rescue; at the same time, external observers noted that the 054B-class frigate entered the Liaoning carrier group for the first time. On June 5, Taiwan's defense department reported that there were still 10 PLA Navy ships and 6 civilian vessels active around the Taiwan Strait. While the number of air sorties may sometimes decrease, the continuous presence of surface forces can more effectively consume the opponent's surveillance and response resources.

The Southern Theater Navy faces a continuous operational space in the South China Sea, Bashi Channel, and Philippine Sea directions. The issue here is not whether there is a single strongest ship, but whether multiple formations can operate simultaneously over the long term. Ships like the 052D Tongchuan are valuable because they can undertake regional air defense, anti-submarine vigilance, anti-ship strikes, and maritime command node tasks, preventing the 055s, carriers, and amphibious assault ships from being overly occupied by routine escort missions.

Shortcomings Still Exist in Anti-Submarine and Long-Range Support

However, the commissioning of the Tongchuan ship should not be interpreted as the PLA Navy having addressed all its shortcomings. The 052DL can carry larger helicopters, which is just a hardware entry point; the quantity of Z-20F helicopters, joint training between ship and aircraft, and experience in deploying sonar and sonar buoys will ultimately determine whether anti-submarine capabilities can transition from paper to the sea. The U.S. Navy's advantages still lie in the long-term operation of carrier strike groups, long-range logistics, ammunition replenishment, and joint operational experience. This gap will not automatically disappear just by launching a few more ships.

A more realistic assessment is that the Tongchuan ship represents an elevation of the PLA Navy's "lower limit." Previously, whether a formation could provide enough regional air defense ships was a calculable issue; now the question is gradually shifting to whether these ships can maintain high-intensity operations under complex electromagnetic environments, sustained anti-submarine pressure, and long-range logistics conditions. What is truly worth watching is not when the 36th 052D will appear, but whether this new batch of 052DL will become fixed escort members during the next long-range training of the carrier or the 076-class amphibious assault ship.
